P9 - Art Nouveau Architecture in Prague

Tour duration: 3 ½ - 4 ½ hours according to your choice of sights

Tour description: Prague is one of the centers of European Art Nouveau architecture, together with Vienna and Budapest. In each city the artistic expression of Art Nouveau style developed differently. In Bohemia it combined with older historical revival styles or folkloric inspiration and resulted in a unique amalgam. And then, the Czech architects and artists rejected excessive ornaments and opted for rather geometrical motifs. There are a number of Art Nouveau buildings in Prague, dispersed all around the city center and its neighboring areas. Therefore we will take the tram one or two times (which in itself might be an interesting experience) in order to see a couple of the most beautiful examples of this charming style. Whenever possible, we are going to have a look inside the Art Nouveau buildings to see the splendid interiors.

Within the framework of this tour, accompanied by our guide, you can choose to visit the following sights:
  • Saint Peter and Pavel church – this Neo-Gothic church is part of the Vyšehrad fortification. At the beginning of the 20th century it was abundantly decorated with Art Nouveau frescoes by a married couple of artists named Urban. They created two impressive cycles in this church: a gallery of Christian saints and scenes of remote Czech history. If you choose this option, I will guide you through the church and the tour will end there. Then you can either continue on your own and take a walk through the historic Vyšehrad district, or you can use our agency´s services. Vyšehrad is an oasis of peace with parks and a famous cemetery (Prague´s “Père Lachaise”) and you can also enjoy beautiful and unusual views of Prague from its fortification.
  • Alfons Mucha Museum – a unique museum dedicated to one of the founders of Art Nouveau style. At the turn of the 20th century Alfons Mucha became famous for his lithographed advertisements for theater plays – e.g. those for the famous French artist Sarah Bernhardt. The museum collection includes namely the posters and photographs of this world famous artist. One hour guided tour in English at the Mucha Museum has to be ordered in advance.
  • The Municipal House – this is an exclusive tour, because each day there are only two or three tours of this house in English. The building itself is a stunning jewel of Art Nouveau architecture and décor: we can take a trip back in time again, this time to the beginning of the 20th century and visit the Art Nouveau Smetana concert hall, as well as famous rooms called the Ladies, small debating rooms, decorated by the best artists of the time – Alfons Mucha, J. Preisler. These rooms are a beautiful example of crafts of the time. This house represents a unique harmonic whole, a beautiful reminder of the luxuriant belle époque.

Jana was an exceptional tour guide who made our trip to Prague all that more interesting and informative. After the tour we felt quite at home and we were able to explore the city with a firm understanding of the history of the city that we received from Jana. Prague Arts Tour and Jana are spot on. Thanks again Jana. (Margo and Guy from Canada) * Last September we toured the main cities of Central Europe with a bilingual group from Canada. During two weeks, Jana guided us through the different cities and buildings sharing with us her vast knowledge of art, history and daily life in her part of the world. We found her to be very professional at all times and eager to make sure everyone questions and worries were answered. She was flexible to the demands of the group and always tried to please everyone. She communicated clearly the daily activities in both languages and made us feel safe at all times. Jana's greatest asset is her love for her job and as a result she paints for you a picture of the beauty, opulence and the grandeur of these imperial cities. Her passion and professionalism made it all worthwhile. Thank you Jana. (Lise and Frank Loiocano; Canada)
